Is this road bike any good?
A friend is selling a Veloce road bike. It's about 15 years old and has Shimano RSX brakes, gears and rear mech, Shimano SG crank (42/53) and what feels like a fairly light steel frame. It seems to run alright and looks like it has been looked after.
I'm just looking for a half decent road bike to get me back into cycling (e.g. 10-20 mile journeys) after a 5 year break. Should this fit the bill and if so how much do you reckon is a fair price?
My last bike was a GT Tequesta 1998 model and ideally I'd like something of a similar spec (but a road bike).
I'm not certain I'd agree with DavidD on price but the Veloce you describe would be an adequate bike for your use. You said it had been well cared for, most bikes get far less mileage than you would expect so if everything works as intended and there's no visible signs of abuse I'd say go for it. A Veloce would be, as you described, a halfway decent bike. Just be sure that it is sized right for you because if it isn't, riding it could be a means to an end where you'll stop again because you're not comfortable on it. The price should be negotiable for both of you. My theory on prices is whatever the seller and buyer can compromise on.
For most of us, once you really get into cycling an upgrade will be in order so there's little sense in spending a lot of cash on a new bike in the beginning. Ride the Veloce until you're ready for a newer one and take satisfaction that if you do end up losing interest again that you didn't waste a lot of money. I'm an advocate for always starting out with a used bike for those reasons.
